Job Summary:

The Building Construction Trades Teacher provides direct instruction and supervision of high school-aged students in the area of Building Construction.  The program’s curriculum is designed to meet a rigorous set of core program competencies that will prepare students with the skills and knowledge to either enter the workforce or transition successfully into a post-secondary education program.

 

Qualifications:

Professional Educator License (PEL) or eligible for an appropriate license OR 

Provisional Career and Technical Educator

  • Documented a minimum of 8,000 hours of work experience in the skill that will be taught

Valid Driver’s License and CDL license

Access to a vehicle

 

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Staff.

Terms of Employment:

This is a 9-month position plus an additional 20 days during the summer that may include summer school. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.

Exempt

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitates students’ learning in correlation with the Illinois Learning Standards.
  2. Communicates the essential questions to clarify the learning goals for each lesson.
  3. Configures lessons and select instructional strategies with the intent of ensuring that all students can answer a lesson essential question by its conclusion.
  4. Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  5. Demonstrates the ability to individually assess and monitor the students’ skills.
  6. Creates and nurtures supportive, student-centered classroom communities that promote personal empowerment, academic growth and social-emotional well-being of all learners.
  7. Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  8. Provides students with regular opportunities to collaborate with peers, move with purpose, and experience diverse instructional strategies so that they are physically and intellectually engaged as learners.
  9. Provides students time to interact with instructional resources and materials in a thoughtful, active manner to support their comprehension and long-term retention of information.
  10. Allows students to take an active role in their learning by setting and monitoring individualized goals, and processing and reflecting deliberately within lessons.
  11. Implements each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) as written and collaborates with colleagues to ensure appropriate modifications or accommodations.
  12. Assists and provides support to students struggling with social-emotional and behavioral concerns through the MTSS framework.
  13. Incorporates cultural diversity and appreciation within the curriculum.
  14. Uses technologies appropriately in the teaching/learning process.
  15. Participates in a professional learning community with a variety of stakeholders including but not limited to instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  16. Participates in a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  17. Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with parents and the community.
  18. Collaborates with the Building and Trades Advisory team throughout the year.
  19. Follows the procedures and policies regarding vendor bidding requirements and processes.
  20. Manages and maintains equipment and materials.
  21. Maintains an up-to-date inventory of equipment and materials.
  22. Observes health and safety regulations.
  23. Meets schedules and deadlines.  
  24. Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must demonstrate a record of effectiveness in their own teaching

  • Must have knowledge of appropriate procedures to ensure safe operation of relevant tools and equipment
  • Must have knowledge of the concepts and terminology used in building construction systems
  • Must have knowledge of construction procedures and techniques: installation procedures for flooring framing systems, components of a wall and ceiling layout for wall and roof section construction, installation of doors and windows, elements of roof construction; relevant energy conservation practices, and practices finish carpentry
  • Must have the ability to develop, in students,  job-related skills including time management, ability to work both independently as well as part of a team; punctuality, work ethic, and leadership.
  • Must stay up to date on local building codes as well as homeowners’ association policies and procedures where applicable.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands of this position include frequent standing or walking for extended periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Repetitive bending at the waist as well as kneeling, stooping, crouching to assist is also required. Employees may reach overhead as well as above the shoulders and horizontally. The employee must have manual dexterity and coordination sufficient to operate construction equipment needed.  The employee must be able to drive to and from the work site.
