Description | Job Summary:
The Director of Safety and Security is responsible for overseeing the safety and security of all district schools and facilities. This role involves developing and implementing comprehensive safety plans, coordinating with law enforcement and emergency management agencies, and leading district efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. The Director works in collaboration with the district’s leadership team, including the Assistant Superintendent, to align safety strategies with the district’s strategic goals and ensure compliance with all safety regulations and best practices.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required
Valid Driver’s License
Experience:
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in law enforcement, emergency management, or a related field, with at least three years in training others. Experience in a school setting or with school safety programs is highly desirable.

Terms of Employment:
This part-time IMRF position consists of 130 working days per year, with an annual salary range of $40,000 to $60,000, as set by the Board of Education. The superintendent will determine the work calendar.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Director of Safety and Security compensation package offers annual sick and personal leave days and tuition reimbursement options. The Board provides a monthly allowance for cellular phone and travel expenses, a yearly wellness allowance, and membership dues for up to two professional organizations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and execute a district-wide safety and security strategy that aligns with the district’s educational mission and strategic goals.
- Collaborate with the Superintendent and other district leaders to integrate safety and security into the district’s broader strategic planning processes.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing safety policies, procedures, and emergency response plans.
- Coordination & Collaboration
- Serve as the liaison between the school district and law enforcement, fire protection, and emergency management agencies.
- Co-chair the District Safety Committee, ensuring regular review and updates of safety protocols.
- Work with the Business Office to coordinate safety-related budgeting and resource allocation, including overseeing security-related expenditures.
- Coordinate and oversee the district's security personnel, including training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
- Safety Planning & Compliance
- Ensure a comprehensive safety and security plan is implemented across all district buildings and properties.
- Conduct regular school safety inspections and participate in health, life, and safety evaluations.
- Develop and oversee the district’s emergency preparedness programs, including training and drills for staff and students.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations, including school safety plans and emergency response protocols.
- Emergency Response & Crisis Management
- Lead the district’s crisis response efforts, including participation in the behavior threat assessment team.
- Develop and maintain effective communication systems for use during emergencies, including managing district radios, security cameras, and alarms.
- Act as the primary point of contact for all safety-related incidents and coordinate the district’s response to emergencies.
- Community Engagement & Training
- Work with community stakeholder groups to promote school safety initiatives and foster partnerships that support the district’s safety goals.
- Develop and conduct safety training programs for district staff, including school resource officers, security personnel, and crossing guards.
- Coordinate and participate in the State-required Annual Review Meeting to review school safety plan protocols and procedures.
- Grants & Resource Management
- Assist in developing, applying, and managing grants related to school safety and security.
- Oversee the acquisition, maintenance, and deployment of safety and security equipment, including technology applications used by the district.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of current trends, research, and best practices in school safety and emergency management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, students, law enforcement, and the community.
- Proven ability to handle emergencies and act decisively in crises.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead and motivate teams and coordinate district-wide safety initiatives.
- Proficient in using safety and security technology, including surveillance systems, communication tools, and data management.
- High integrity and commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information appropriately.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands of this position include frequent standing or walking for extended periods. The employee may occasionally lift, push, pull, and move up to 50 pounds. Repetitive bending at the waist, kneeling, stooping, and crouching to assist are also required. Employees may reach overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.
